Objective 3.
Exhibit, knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative, professional in a global and digital society.
Week 2 - Deriving and Unpacking Learning Targets Greg Haut, 5-12-2024
Derive a long-term learning target and three supportive learning targets from a national or state standard. Explain the process you used to do so. Assume you are teaching an online class or using a learning management system to support your instruction. Create a video in which you unpack one of the learning targets for your students. This is a role play. You should be teaching students in the video, not talking about how you would do so. Submit: 1) your explanation, and 2) a link to the video (do not upload a video file). The first step was to choose an anchor standard from the Illinois State standards, I chose Anchor Standard 5: "Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation. Enduring Understanding: Artists, curators, and others consider a variety of factors and methods, including evolving technologies, when preparing and refining artwork for display or when deciding if and how to preserve and protect artwork. Essential Questions: (a) What methods and processes are considered when preparing artwork for presentation or preservation? (b) How does refining artwork affect its meaning to the viewer? (c) What criteria are considered when selecting work for a presentation, a portfolio, or a collection?" Then I went to the high school section of the strand. VA: Pr4.1.II a. Analyze, select, and critique personal artwork for a collection or portfolio presentation. From that, I created a long-term learning target, and from that target I unpacked it into three learning targets that can be used throughout the lesson. LONG TERM LEARNING TARGET "I can develop proficiency in creating and presenting artwork." I can create artwork that demonstrates an understanding of various art elements and principles, such as line color, shape, form, texture, balance, and unity. I can use a variety of art mediums and techniques to explore and express personal ideas, emotions, and experiences. I can present artwork in a meaningful and visually engaging way, considering composition, context, and audience. By focusing on these learning targets the students can enhance their artistic skills, expand their creative thinking, and effectively communicate their ideas through the visual arts. REFLECTION
"Watch this video I made on deriving and unpacking learning targets to understand how clear objectives can enhance student learning and streamline assessment in the high school art room."
How did completing this work contribute toward your understanding of the objective?
Creating this video has helped my understanding of the objective as well as thriving and deriving and unpacking standards. I set this up as a lesson where I was teaching the students on a typical Monday even though the students were nutcrackers and minions and did the work ahead of time these learning targets helped me write them more efficiently and by unpacking them, I can get to the route of my curriculum faster and I'm about efficiency, but I want depth for the lesson.
What do you know now that you didn’t know at the beginning of the course because of this work?
as of now, I also know how to quickly effectively, and efficiently unpack state standards so that I can drive my curriculum and make informed choices to create curriculum and projects that are aligned to the standards that are aligned to my assessments, which makes me a much more well-rounded educator.
What do you like about this work?
About this work, I like the comic relief of the video, teaching minions and nutcrackers, and the way that it emphasizes to the students what's important it also felt like a normal lesson. The fact that my lessons are brief to the point, and then the students are individualized and they come to me and process and work and do what is necessary in the setting for them to create a successful art piece, and I feel this was a glimpse into what I do every single Monday when I present lesson.
What is one thing you can improve upon in this work?
I wish that in the video I could've included what the students see as I spend a lot of time creating Google slides for them. It is on canvas. They have numerous examples as well as techniques and processes that they can view, and they can play at their own pace.
What long and short-term goals can you set for yourself based on completion of this work?
As for long-term and short-term goals, I want to push myself to unpack the standards all the time as the arts have a very clear set of standards and through unpacking them with this process that I was shown, I can do so effectively I have already actually helped a few other teachers and shown them how I go about the process of unpacking the standards and hopefully it helps them as well because standards for every subject and educators. We need to hit the standards and make the choices of what's important and I want to make sure that we are continually helping each other to grow in our profession.

Week 3 - Assignment: Evaluation of Lesson Plan
Greg Haut 5-19-2024
Find a lesson for your grade level and content area. You may obtain the lesson in any manner you choose (e.g., Google search, ChatGPT, lesson repository, etc.). Share a link to the lesson. If generated by ChatGPT or other AI, include that information. Using robust support from course required studies, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the following: Learning targets Incorporation of checks for understanding Technology use for formative assessment Based on your evaluation, what specific improvements would you make and why? Again, be specific. For example, if you would integrate a technology, name the technology. The lesson you find might not use the exact language above (i.e., learning targets, checks for understanding). That is okay. They might be there, but are labeled differently, or they might not be included at all. This is all part of the evaluation process. If they are not included, do not simply say they aren't there; evaluate the necessity of them in the context of the lesson. Submission Content Submission Content For this evaluation of a lesson plan I wanted to incorporate a readily available AI tool and I have not explored much. I went into Snapchat and asked my AI " Hey can you write a visual art lesson plan for a high school student?" The AI responded with, "What medium and topic are you interested in focusing on"? My response was " A mixed-media drawing of a fish". I received the outline, I asked the AI to elaborate by adding the Illinois State standards. I took screenshots of the conversation for future reference. I recieved, "1. Introduction, 2. Materials list ,3. Steep by step instructions 4. Reflection and Critique." For an outline, I was shocked that this was written in about 20 seconds. Once I asked for the standards to be added this lesson became plausible. The Learning Targets were non-existent, but by creating my own and using the methods that were previously taught I created a few for this particular lesson plan. I am thinking about using this lesson plan with Intro to Art next school year, as this process was engaging for me, and I still had to create and elaborate as the AI was close, but not all the way there. Berger states, "In Leaders of Their Own Learning we promote the practice of nesting supporting or daily learning targets within long-term learning targets. Long-term learning targets are derived from standards (e.g., Common Core, state, local, district standards), which can be bundled together to focus instruction and assessment. Turning bundled standards into long-term learning targets makes the language of the standards plain to students and helps them understand where they are headed with their learning over a period of days or week. Supporting targets, which are often broken down further into daily learning targets, are derived from long-term targets and become the anchor for daily instruction. Supporting targets “nest” within long term targets and are created by breaking the long term targets into manageable chunks that will guide your students’ learning on a day-to-day basis". Here are the learning targets I wrote for this particular lesson: I can demonstrate my understanding of fish anatomy by accurately sketching the shapes and details. Of a fish. I can experiment with a variety of mixed media techniques to create texture, pattern, and color in an original drawing of a fish. I can reflect on my artwork and make informers decisions from my creative choices. I can engage in peer critique processes to provide constructive feedback and develop their ability to analyze and discuss artwork. The checks for understanding were included in this simple outline fairly well. The start was a teacher-driven discussion about types of fish and their characteristics. I would/will provide a detailed Google slide presentation as well. The list of materials is a student's choice and can be demoed or front-loaded which will allow for individual questions based on techniques chosen. The final section of this lesson is about the reflection process as well as the critique. This is a great check for understanding. The only element that is missing is the use of technology which I would incorporate during work time I would use Jamboard for an in-progress critique, and then Artsonia is used for the digital portfolio and artist statement like all of my lessons, but that is on me as the educator to in force as the AI wouldn't have been previewed to what is already taking place in the classroom. Using Snapchat AI as a tool and starting point was an amazing experiment to draft and break down a lesson plan. It was quick and fun as well as helpful, but having the proper knowledge to fill in the gaps and elaborate where the message is needed as the lesson was close, but not quite ready for the students. REFLECTION
How did completing this work contribute toward your understanding of the objective? Completing this work contributed towards my understanding of how Snapchat AI can write a lesson plan for me and I can go back in unpack the learning targets, clean it up, and have a lesson that would be workable with state standards and the applicable and very little time. What do you know now that you didn’t know at the beginning of the course because of this work? I had never really created a lesson plan using AI. I was aware of its capabilities, but I never intended to do so through doing this. I learned a lot I know I need to make my judgments and put my spin on things but when a time crunch or when creating something new or wanting a change of pace it is OK to ask for a little bit of assistance. What do you like about this work? Thoroughly enjoyed using it to create a lesson evaluate the lesson unpack the lesson tweak the lesson and come to the realization that AI is a great tool not that it was limited, but it does need a human spin or interaction with it. What is one thing you can improve upon in this work? One thing that I could improve upon in this work would be to bake sure that I push AI to the max by telling it more of what I want to do the capabilities are there it doesn't mean it does enough for my standards and my standards I mean as Mister Haut, teacher for visual arts, not the state standards. It was interesting and I viewed this as an experiment. What long and short-term goals can you set for yourself based on completion of this work? My goals include integrating AI as needed. While I plan to incorporate AI where necessary, I will continuously refine and adjust its usage. Although AI is becoming more advanced and impressive, it still falls short in comparison to human interaction. It's both fascinating and unsettling, but it's important to remember that AI is simply a tool and not without its flaws.
